About Saraswati Vidyalaya
What is SV?
Saraswati is the source of learning, knowledge and wisdom. Vidyalaya is the place of learning i.e. a school. It is committed to creating a movement to empower the children of these villages through education. Education is the key to self-esteem, self-sustenance, economic wellbeing, and happiness.
It is a unique movement that is bringing non-formal education to the doorsteps of villages, where children are offered five years of schooling and primary health-care.
These children constitute India & Nepal’s upcoming productive population. Helping them thus will maximise benefit in terms of India’s & Nepal’s all round development.
The Curriculum
A panel of reputed education scholars has developed the curricula, which is aligned with the local culture and government-prescribed texts. Along with imparting basic alphabetic and numeric knowledge, great emphasis is placed on health and hygiene, character-building, ethical values and samskars. Other skills for the development of the entire community are also taught. Children develop the ability to pursue higher studies if they so desire.
The Class
A Saraswati Vidyalaya class has between 30 and 40 children in the age group of 5-16 years. It is often conducted under the shade of a big three or in a hut.
The Teacher
The teachers are locally educated youths. They are specially trained for purposes of becoming catalysts of change and building hope for the entire village.
Cost and Set up
Each Saraswati Vidyalaya usually becomes self-sufficient within 5 years of its setting up. The entire school operates on a shoestring budget of less than 75p per day. It takes an annual commitment of £250 for five years to start one Saraswati Vidyalaya. Villages provide other infrastructure needs.
